Why the North Country?

Productive, well-educated and more than 88,000 strong, our primary work force provides a dependable labor pool. Major military installations and universities in the region create an excellent supply of potential second wage earners for your company to utilize.

  • Average industrial wages are 25-33% lower than in other areas in the U.S.
  • Many area manufacturers have cited the ‘dedicated work force’ and ‘low employee turnover’ as key advantages to their North Country operations. Others have said that the ‘good attitude’ and ‘on-time’ performance of their employees were important.

Job Training

New York State funds, and North Country Alliance members administer at the county level, employee training programs for private firms. Wages of newly hired workers during initial training are assisted up to 50% for one year.

Training is offered by many of the region’s colleges and universities, and our work force can adapt quickly to the needs of the industry. The North country Regional Education Center for Workforce Development in Potsdam creates and administers job training programs tailored to the needs of individual businesses. These programs include employee relocation assistance; expansion of New York State operations; and retraining employees to adapt to technological change.

Clarkson University’s Center for Advanced Materials Processing (CAMP) conducts research and development in high technology materials, some of which have applications in the medical equipment and supplies industry. The Center actively encourages collaborative ventures with industry and promotes and assists in the development of new businesses.
